When I returned from a hectic work trip and opened my closet to change into my cozy pajamas, I was met with a sight I’ll never forget. All my clothes had been replaced with pink dresses. Who did it and why?
Soon after meeting my now-husband, Blake, I realized he was the man I’d always dreamt of. We met through a dating app, and our first date was pretty casual. We met at a local burger joint for dinner.
“So, you work in engineering?” he asked me that night. “That’s more of a male-dominated field, isn’t it?”
“The last time I checked, I thought we were living in the 21st century,” I joked. “Seems like gender equality and diversity at the workplace is an alien concept for men in finance… men who meet their date at a burger joint.”
“Hah!” he chuckled. “I didn’t mean it that way… I just thought you’re so intelligent, so smart, and so… beautiful.”
Blake knows how to subtly steer a conversation in the direction he wants, and that’s exactly how he won my heart that night.
Our dates became more frequent, and it wasn’t until after a year of dating that we decided to involve our families. Blake was so eager to introduce me to his mother, Paula. He thought we’d like each other, and he was absolutely right.
Paula and I became good friends the day we met for the first time. She’s not the usual, cunning MIL. She’s kind, helpful, understanding, and most importantly… VERY FUNNY!
Soon after, I introduced Blake to my parents, and they loved him. We took this as a sign to move forward and start preparing for the wedding.
We tied the knot in an intimate ceremony with our close friends and family, and I’d say it was the best day of my life.
Two years later, Blake and I welcomed our daughter, Eliza, into this world.
“I can’t believe how cute she is,” Blake said, caressing her tiny hands. “She’s just like you.”
Now, Eliza’s two, and our world revolves around her. She’s always running around the house, opening up drawers, and creating a mess, but Blake always tells me to stay calm and let her enjoy.
I thought everything was going well in our lives until the day I returned home from a work trip to see something I wasn’t ready for.
It was a Friday afternoon when I landed back in our hometown after a week-long trip. The trip was lined up with meetings and presentations, so I was looking forward to relaxing on the weekend before I went back to the office on Monday.
As I parked my car in the driveway, I noticed my father-in-law, Earl’s car outside our house.
“Looks like Blake’s having a blast inside!” I said to myself as I stepped out of my car.
Inside, I saw Blake sitting with Earl in the living room, while Eliza was playing with her toys on the floor.
“Hi, guys!” I waved at them. “Where’s Paula?”
“Oh, she had some work to do,” Earl told me.
“Mommy!” Eliza chirped upon seeing me.
“Hi, baby!” I said, spreading my arms wide as she ran to hug me.
After escorting Eliza to her room, I headed toward our bedroom. All I wanted was to change into my pajamas and chill in bed. However, when I opened the closet door, I was shocked to see what was inside.
All of my clothes were gone, replaced by a lineup of pink dresses. Long, short, ruffled, backless, glittery, cold-shoulder—you name it. It felt like I’d walked into Barbie’s closet.
At first, I thought it was some weird prank, so I started digging, hoping to find my regular clothes hidden in the back. Nothing.
I checked under the bed and in the bathroom, but my clothes were nowhere to be found.
What the heck? I thought. Who did this?
Furious, I headed downstairs to confront Blake but gasped when I heard what he said.
“Like your new wardrobe?” he asked sternly.
I was stunned. How did he know why I was coming downstairs?
“Where are all my clothes?” I demanded. “What’s with the pink dresses? Is this a joke, Blake?”
“It’s not a joke,” he said, standing up. “You better wear those clothes from now on.”
Blake didn’t sound like the kind, jolly guy he usually was. There was a dark tinge in his tone that I couldn’t quite comprehend.
“Watch your tone,” I warned, glancing at Earl, who had the same intense look in his eyes.
“Earl, can you please tell me what’s going on? Where are my clothes?” I asked.
“We thought it was time for a change,” Earl said sternly. “We thought it was necessary.”
“We?” I repeated, stepping back. “What do you mean? Blake, what’s this about?”
That’s when Blake told me what he had done to my clothes.
“We gave your clothes to charity, and some went in the trash,” he revealed. “Dad and I thought you should dress more… feminine. You know, like a lady.”
“How dare you, Blake!” I shouted. “Who gave you the right to give away my clothes? Do you even realize how expensive they were?”
“We just thought you’d set a better example for Eliza,” Earl chimed in. “She’d love to see her mom in more feminine clothes.”
Feminine? Really Earl? I thought.
“You should be grateful for the new dresses, babe,” Blake said. “I thought you’d like them.”
They tossed out my clothes like garbage and expected me to be grateful for these ridiculous dresses? I was literally fuming with anger at that point. I couldn’t tell whose idea this exactly was, but I knew I wouldn’t let them get away with it.
I grabbed my car keys and stormed out of the house.
I knew there was only one person who could help me with this, and that was my beloved mother-in-law. I knew Paula would’ve stopped them if she were here. I was sure she had no idea about it.
When I told her what happened, her face flushed red with anger.
“They did what?” She asked in disbelief. “How dare they give them away to charity without letting you know. That’s ridiculous!”
“I know,” I cried. “Can’t believe Blake did this to me.”
“Don’t worry, Alice,” she put her hand on my shoulder. “I know exactly what we need to do now.”
Paula then shared her plan, and together, we fine-tuned it. Later that evening, I drove her back to our house. We both walked in wearing pink dresses, just like the ones Blake and Earl had put in my closet.
“Paula? What are you doing here?” Earl asked, eyeing her pink dress.
“I just found out what you both did to Alice,” Paula confronted him. “You like deciding what women should wear, huh?”
“I… Uhh…” Earl stammered, unable to speak.
“How about you and Blake start dressing like proper gentlemen?” she spat. “How does that sound?”
I had to fight back my laughter at the look on their faces. Earl and Blake glanced at each other, looking guilty as charged.
Before they could respond, Paula pulled out two pink matching tuxedos from the bag she had brought.
“From now on, I expect you both to wear these every Sunday dinner,” she said sternly. “You know, to set a good example for our granddaughter.”
Earl looked like he was going to pass out. “You can’t be serious, honey,” he protested.
“Yeah, Mom,” Blake stood up from the couch. “This is crazy! We can’t wear these pink tuxedos. That’s not happening.”
“This is happening,” Paula said as she placed the tuxedos on the couch. “I’m very serious, guys. You should be grateful to me, after all, it’s free shopping! And all your old clothes are headed to the charity.”
Blake and Earl were stunned, but Paula wasn’t done. They watched her in disbelief as she pulled out a notepad from her bag and began jotting down every piece of furniture, appliance, and tool in the house that Blake and Earl loved.
She already had replacements lined up.
Blake’s favorite leather recliner? Swapped for an old-school wooden chair.
Earl’s prized barbecue grill? About to be replaced by an old-fashioned smoker.
“I figured this would better match your ‘masculine tastes,’” Paula said, finishing her list. “You’ll thank me later.”
I can never forget the look on their faces. Their skin had flushed red, and their eyes were wide open, but they couldn’t say a word. They knew how Paula was. She always kept her word, and this was something she’d execute.
Earl and Blake realized they had messed up, and there was nothing they could do to take control of the situation.
Long story short, they never dare touched my closet again. And those pink dresses? I sent them off to charity after Paula made Earl and Blake pay for my new clothes. I went on a FREE shopping spree with Paula and bought all the comfy clothes that I had in my wardrobe before the disaster.
I feel so lucky to have a mother-in-law like her!
